APL320211 www.anpec.com.twFunction DescriptionCharge CycleWhen the APL3202 is powered with a battery connected,the IC firstly detects if the cell voltage is ready for fullcharge current. If the battery voltage is below pre-chargethreshold (2.9V typ.), the device supplies 1/10 the programmedcharge current. On the contrary, when the batteryvoltage is over the pre-charge threshold, the devicesupplies the full charge current, as programmed by RSETfrom ISET pin to GND. When the battery voltage approachesthe 4.2V termination voltage, the device entersconstant-voltage mode and the full charge current graduallydecreases until the charge current drops to the terminationcurrent threshold, which is equal to 1/10 full chargingcurrent, and the IC stops charging (see Figure 1).Full Charge Current SettingThe full charge current is programmed by connecting aresistor from the ISET pin to ground. The full charge currentis 1000 times of the current flowing out of the ISETpin and can be calculated by the following equation:SETSET SETCHGRK VI′=whereVSETis ISET regulation voltage (1V, typical).KSETis the charging current set factor (1000, typical).The charging current set factor and the ISET regulationvoltage are shown in the Electrical Characteristics. TheISET regulation voltage is reduced by thermal regulationfunction.Charge Termination Detection and RechargeCharging is terminated when ICHGfalls to 10% of the fullcharge current set by RSETand the charger is in voltagemode (VBATTis nearly 4.2V). The charge termination isdetected by monitoring the ISET pin. When the ISET pinvoltage falls below 0.1V and takes longer than TTERM(1ms,typical), charging is terminated. The STAT output keepshigh state when the charger operates in standby mode.After charge termination, the battery voltage is monitoredby the APL3202 continuously. If the battery voltage dropsbelow 4.05V and takes longer than TRECHARGE(2ms, typical),a new charge cycle starts to recharge the battery.Manual ShutdownThe ISET pin provides two functions: connecting the resistorRSETfrom the ISET pin to ground to set the fullcharge current; and disconnecting the RSETfrom GND toshut down the device. Once the RSETis disconnected, aninternal 2.5mA current pulls the ISET pin high. When theISET pin voltage reaches the 1.21V shutdown thresholdvoltage, the device enters shutdown mode. In shutdownmode, the charging stops, the VIN supply current dropsto 25mA and the battery drain current is below 1mA. ReconnectingRSETto ground enables the charger to operationnormally. The STAT output keeps high state when thecharger is turned to shutdown mode.Thermal RegulationThe APL3202 is thermally regulated to keep the junctiontemperature at 120°C. When the junction temperaturereaches 120°C, the charger does not shut down but reducescharge current to keep the junction temperature at120°C. This feature protects the APL3202 from excessivetemperature and allows the charger to operate withmaximum power dissipation by reudcing the charge currentand optimizes the board design for compact sizeand typical thermal conditions.Charge Status Output (STAT)The STAT is an open-drain output. When the charger is incharge mode, the STAT output is in pull-low state. Untilthe charge current drops to the termination currentthreshold, the charging stops, and the STAT output is inhigh impedance state
